Gail Bates
 Delegate Gail Bates has lived in Howard County for 29 years with her husband David. Her sons Robert and Dwight graduated from Glenelg High School. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Gail has been a teacher, accounting manager and a self-employed Certified Public Accountant. Politically, Gail served 8 years as Assistant to County Executive Charles Ecker and 3 years as Assistant to Delegate Don Murphy.
Gail serves Howard County as a Member in the House of Delegates, through appointment in February 2002 and election in November 2002. Currently a member of the Appropriations Committee, she previously served on House & Government Operations and Commerce & Government Matters. Gail has served in Republican leadership as a Deputy Minority Whip since 2003. She was appointed by the Speaker of the House to the Joint Committee on Children, Youth and Families in 2003 and recently was appointed by Republican leadership to serve on the Governor’s Council on Family Violence.
Professional memberships include Maryland Assocition of CPA’s, National Conference of State Legislatures, American Legislative Exchange Council, the General Assembly’s Veteran’s Caucus and Legislative Sportsman’s Caucus.
Gail‘s political activity has been extensive over the last 26 years including membership in both the Republican Club (serving as Treasurer) and the Howard County Republican Women(founding member, two term President and current Historian). Gail was first appointed to and later elected to two terms on the Howard County Republican Central Committee. In addition, Gail served as campaign manager for Councilman Charles Feaga through 2 successful campaigns. These activities resulted in recognition with the HC Republican Life Achievement Award in 1990 and the Charles Miller Republican of the Year Award in 2002.
Community service included service on the Board of Directors of Howard County Tourism Council (current Treasurer), Montgomery General Hospital, Howard County Red Cross, Christian Jail Ministry, Howard County Farm Bureau, Therapeutic Horsemanship Association and Howard County Disabilities Advisory Council. A business woman, Gail was a member of the Howard County Chamber of Commerce, serving on its Legislative Committee for 16 years. She continues to be a strong voice for business as a member of the legislature.
